The Luxury Care Guide: How to Maintain Your Fur Coat

A genuine fur coat is more than just a fashion statement; it’s a lifetime investment. When properly maintained, a quality fur can last for 50 years or more. However, because fur is an organic material, it requires a different level of care than your standard wool or synthetic coats.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the essential “Dos and Don’ts” to ensure your piece remains as soft and lustrous as the day you bought it.

Avoid Friction and Chemicals

The two silent killers of fur are friction and alcohol-based products.

  • The Shoulder Bag Trap: Avoid carrying a shoulder bag consistently. The strap will rub against the fur, causing the guard hairs to break and eventually creating a bald spot.
  • Perfume First, Fur Second: Always apply perfume or hairspray before putting on your coat. The alcohol and oils in these products can dry out the pelts and create odors that are difficult to remove.

Give Your Coat Room to Breathe

Proper storage prevents the fur from becoming “matted” or “crushed.”

  • The Right Support: Use a contoured wooden hanger. Thin wire hangers will distort the shape of the shoulders over time.
  • Avoid Plastic: Never store your fur in a plastic garment bag. Use a breathable cotton bag to protect it from dust while allowing air circulation.

What to Do if it Gets Wet

Most people panic when caught in the rain, but fur is naturally resilient if handled correctly.

  1. Shake it out: Remove excess water by giving the coat a gentle shake.
  2. Air Dry Only: Hang it in an open area with good airflow.
  3. The “Never” List: Never use a hair dryer, a clothes dryer, or hang it near a radiator. Direct heat will shrink the leather (the pelt) under the fur, causing it to crack.

Annual Cleaning & Cold Storage

Unlike a cotton shirt, you cannot wash a fur coat at home.

Summer Vaulting: When the temperature rises, home closets become too warm. Professional cold storage (maintained at 50°F / 10°C) is the only way to prevent the natural oils from evaporating.

Why Professional Cleaning? Furriers use a “conditioning” process that replenishes the natural oils in the skin.
